girlfriendAt first you might not believe in this weird theory but believe me I have derived it after quiet some research 😉 Do you believe impressing your girl friend is a good business strategy? Read on and I will prove you how.

Let’s start with a simple and silly question. How to be successful in Business? The answer – Find a need for something and satisfy it in the best way possible. But here’s where the problem is – Either we don’t know how to get new needs to satisfy or we simply don’t know the right way to satisfy that need. This is one of the fundamental flaws you will find in businesses that go burst! Why does that happen? Simply because we assume. We assume that, what we believe “can sell”, will actually sell. So, if we are wrong who will give us the real ideas, the real feedback? Obviously, the one who is ready to shell out cash! The customer. So, you ask “where’s the girlfriend in all this?” Let me tell you a short but worthy story.

The hero of our story is a techie guy who works in one of the ‘good’ companies. He later boot straps for his own business and earns a good living. But he is still not satisfied. He wants to do more things and satisfy his entrepreneurial bug. After all it’s not that great to be just good in what we do. And as all others, what he does doesn’t make a great impact on the world, does it? Now one fine weekend he sits down having dinner with his Girlfriend. While chatting he realizes that she is interested in some candy dispensers (if you don’t understand what’s that. No probs, move ahead) and she wants some means to trade this with others. But there’s no platform to do even such a simple task. Eureka! An idea struck. No not the one to make a quick buck; But the one that knows a need and knows how to satisfy it well. He soon launches an online trading platform which can be used by anyone who wants to trade anything for a modest cost. He turns a millionaire with this idea! And the rest as they say is History!

If you are still scratching your heads the name of our hero here is Pierre Omidyar. And the platform being talked about is eBay – now the source of income for millions of people across the globe. Read more here. Did he assumed eBay to be such a huge hit, well might not. But the point I want to make here is a fundamental in business.

We do the so called researches to know market opportunity. Businesses shell out millions on R&D to identify new market opportunities. Do all of them get it? No! Why ? Simple, these research reports are not done with the real customers. And even if they do they do not take this to the grass root levels. Come out of the cubicles and the cabins and ask the end customer. Ask him what he wants. Ask him whether what you are giving him is the right thing, in the right way, at the right time, via the right mode, right…right…right. Because if any of these rights go wrong chances are your failure is waiting round the corner.

The best thing you can do to make me happy is first ask me how! Rather than simply assuming about the same. Know your end customers or at least a few of them and try to impress them. They are your girlfriends; they lose temper at anything annoying you do. Impress them and they die for you. They will be your raving fans. No need to mention, try to annoy your Girl friend and how she makes your life Hell!

The story or the title used here was just a metaphor to make you understand and nail it in your brain the very fundamentals of business as I understood. So go ahead talk to your girl friend. And incase if you don’t have a girl friend? Sorry, BizDharma doesn’t provide this service !! 😉
