Why New Year resolutions just don’t work

New Year ResolutionsIf you analyze the most futile things that you did the whole of your life, you would end up with 2 things. The New Year partying and the New Year resolutions. Two things that add just a day’s fun to your life and you end up day dreaming your whole December for the same.

Next time when someone asks you what are their new yea resolutions. Just do me a favor, stare at them, make faces and ask, Have you achieved yours that you planned last year? Or even a year before that? We are not planning resolutions. We are just gossiping with our own selves.

New Year resolution is a ritual done every December? One week down in January and no one would even mutter those words.

Its Crazy!  As if you have to write all stuff that superman can do in the next year. Jot it on a piece of paper. Paste it on the bathroom wall. Cherish it and fool yourself for a week. And later sigh and say “Forget it!”

Bottom line – New Year Resolutions just don’t work.

If this is what happened to you for years, than hey don’t drop your guns. I guess you are still competent enough. Whatever you do, you cared to jot those points? What’s remaining is now to just achieve them! And I believe this post will help you in that front.

And by the way a short message to my regular readers here – For those who were thinking I am dead! Yes I am. Dead with some urgent red buttons to be addressed at office… but don’t worry. Just fasten your seat belts; coz this new year is going to be a joy ride baby!

The real reason we are not able to achieve our resolutions lies in the way we perceive it, plan it or execute it.

Here’s Why New Year resolutions just don’t work!

  • Your resolutions are not SMART enough

We have talked a lot of time about goals and productivity on BizDharma, and as I keep repeating our goals need to be SMART. They need to be Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely. If your plans/goals/resolutions don’t meet these attributes you better recheck them again. Refine what you want to achieve and set clear expectations. Clarity can be a big headstart.

  • Make new year resolutions for the heck of it

Ok this might sound insulting but it’s true. Most of us don’t plan, we just day dream. We are simply not bothered about achieving them. We jot them down, as if it is a ritual. Understand the difference between wants and needs. Understand what is required to be achieved to change your life and what is just good to have.

  • Overwhelm yourself with new year resolutions

Though you might be fully charged to conquer the world, accept the fact that you are still a human being. Having a list of 50 items on your job list every morning you get up will just help you go off to bed again. If you have just one pressing demand from this very day. Just one thing to focus on and crazy power to persist probably you will achieve it. It’s not in the quantity, it’s in the quality.

End of the year if you can just say how you lost 50 pounds in the year or how you manage to triple your sale is more than enough. No one wants you to triple your sales, lose weight, increase height, socialize, learn guitar and run a marathon all at the same time!

  • Don’t work in December/Jan

More than working we have clearly identified when we should not be working. We plan and plan a lot. Planning sets the direction, but without moving ahead, which direction you are standing is pointless.

Remember it’s about the Just Do It! Attitude. It’s when the world is lazing around that you should sharpen your saw.

  • Stretch more than required at the start

At times we stretch too much. Much more than what is required. Remember what happened that night when you were really badly hungry? You ate too much only to puke things again! Same happens when you stretch too much at the start. You start feeling over whelmed. You start losing focus. You start quitting. Remember it’s not about a sprint it’s a marathon.

  • Don’t be accountable

Ask anyone who is the best person in the world? If the person is frank enough the quick reply is “Obviously Me!” We just love ourselves too much. It’s difficult to kick our butts when things go out of shape. When we compromise with accountability.

Go ahead share your list of resolutions. Talk about it. Don’t paste it on the bathroom, tweet about it. Ask someone to poke you and make fun of you when you are not working on what you were supposed to achieve. Ego is the best adrenaline a man can get! (OK women included)

  • We never persist

You know this right? The only goddamn reason things don’t work out. Its like so obvious that your eyes are already trying to run away from reading this. I wont insult you more. Its time you finally take the plunge. It’s time that you start doing. Take those baby steps now!

Happy new year 2011

Happy new year 2011

All very true, people like to think they are trying to improve, but when it comes down to it, it just doesn’t’ happen. Don’t think I’ve met any of my New Years resolution in the last few years, that’s why this year I’ve tried to set SMART targets. We will see how that goes!

Thats great Simon. The smart framework actually helps us gauge the right way of goal setting. There are more chances to achieve them when done in the right way !

This is a god article to start 2011. Yes at times I work too hard and lose interest all the way in between. Need to take care of that…

Just creating a new year resolution doesn’t work..
One need to also create a action plan to achieve that resolution.. This is where most people miss… Instead of having tons of resolutions.. Stick to 1-2 resolution which you always wanted to achieve and work hard to achieve it…

Himanshu Chanda January 8, 2011 at 5:36 pm

Cant agree more on this Harsh. Probably achieving a 100 things can be done too. But day dreaming a 100 without achieving one takes you no where. Focus than is the key. Thanks for dropping by…
